Club History
As far back as 1972 a garden club was started up by a small group of women interested in gardening and who began to hold meetings in their homes. By 1974 they officially applied for membership into the Garden Clubs of Illinois. In 1982 the club became too large to meet in members’ homes, so they arranged to meet at the Ela Township Senior Citizen’s Center next to the Village’s Historical Ela Township Hall. Once again the club moved with the Senior Center to the Foglia YMCA in 1999, and then in 2007 the club moved to St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods. In June, 2023, the club then moved to its current meeting location, Ela Public Library in Lake Zurich.
The garden club began its major project with the Ela Public Library at its former location on Buesching Rd. in Lake Zurich in 1982 and after the library moved into its facility on Route 22 and Old Rand Rd., the Garden Club of Lake Zurich followed along and has enhanced and beautified the gardens there. Many beautiful plants, shrubs and several trees attest to the beauty and dedication put in by the club’s members.
In 2010 the Garden Club of Lake Zurich took on additional gardening for the Village of Lake Zurich at their Celebration Park/Clock Tower Garden on Main St. in the downtown area.
Over the years there have been flower shows sponsored by the Garden Club of Lake Zurich along with the Wauconda Garden Club to promote floral design and interest in the community.
